According to Ovid’s mythology, Medusa was once a beautiful woman serving in Athena’s temple. Then the sea god Poseidon ravaged her in the temple, angering the goddess, who cursed her. Her beauty gone, any creature that looked upon her would turn to stone. The hero Perseus cut off her head, though if there had been two of her, the result might have been different.
