April VanDeGrift is a visual artist who works primarily in oil. VanDeGrift earned her MFA from Boise State University and has taught at various colleges since 2011 including Boise State University, The College of Idaho, and currently the College of Western Idaho. She has created work for the City of Boise, The College of Western Idaho, The College of Idaho, and The Boise Art Museum. Her work can be found at Picture This Gallery and Frame, The Visual Arts Collective, and in private collections.
With an interest in shared experiences and the environmental, she spends time researching science and social issues to create narratives that allow room for contemplation. The viewer is encouraged to think deeply about their roles in our culture and environment. Her method of communication is dynamic, though she is partial towards representation. Some of her previous bodies of work examined the landscape, extinction, and social dynamics. Painting images of areas impacted by development or climate change, VanDeGrift recontextualized the landscape to consider contemporary issues. While the genre of landscape painting has historical precedent, she painted images of smoke-filled rivers, farmland, military bases, and the impact of large populations to reexamine our relationship with the environment.
