Delia Dante Fine Art Gallery: Clementine Wright
My current work revolves around my observations of items found in nature to which I desire to give meaning. I create these small creatures and organic forms in clay bodies to convey the transience of life . We are constantly changing and transforming from one form to another. There is meaning and purpose to each sentient being. I form objects with my hands that evoke the delicate, fragile and ephemeral. I bring notice to those small and diminutive creatures that are largely ignored or considered pests. Small animals and fleeting objects feel vulnerable to me as they are prone to being easily consumed or destroyed. I have gathered driftwood pieces around the rivers of Boise to make altars for them. There is great importance and meaning in death’s ability to make us pause in a moment of arrested beauty and stillness.
These clay creations are all gestures of my inability as a human to process and express grief. My visual medium gives voice to those wordless mournings. There is in each moment of time, a transformation occurring. We are not merely a collection of molecules. There is great beauty in our brief and simple existence . I create work in order to take in the beauty and wonder of nature and to speak to our impermanence. . Energy contains the continuity as it moves beyond form after death and decay. The trace or remnants of the thing are gone, but the memory of it remains. We are all transforming. Clay is my medium to capture a moment in time before metamorphosis occurs.
