"Disappearing and Life Listing"
Prompted by concern for our Pacific northwest environment and fueled by a newfound love of birding, I make enamels that celebrate the immense beauty surrounding us. My “Disappearing” series highlights threatened habitats and species; my lighter “Life Listing” bird series draws inspiration from photos taken during hikes in the woods, on kayak trips, and even in my backyard. I make each work from several separately fired layers of enamel with sgraffito, drawing, and color mixing techniques which render each piece unique. Annealed or coated copper wire joins individual panels. Wall pieces suspend from lengths of salvaged copper pipe. “Birdcage” pieces hang from my copper bowls or found objects. Bowls are hand-cut and hand-hammered from 18-gauge sheet copper. ABOUT THE ARTIST Sheila Evans has lived in the Pacific Northwest for most of her life and worked as a professional artist for over 25 years. After nearly a decade of exclusive work in pastel, she began painting in oil, expanding her subject matter to include still life and animals in addition to her original botanical and landscape work. In 2016, she added kiln-fired enamel on metals to her repertoire and now works regularly in all three mediums. Sheila earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art from Gonzaga University in 1988. ENAMEL PROCESS Each work is made from vitreous enamel kiln-fired onto steel and copper which I have cut, hammered or bent by hand. The designs require several separately fired layers of enamel with sgraffito, drawing, and color mixing techniques which render each piece unique. Annealed or coated copper wire joins individual panels. Wall pieces are suspended from found objects, or from patinated, salvaged copper pipe that has been either hammered or wrapped in wire. Bowls are hand-cut and hand-hammered from 18-gauge sheet copper. https://www.sheilaevans.net |
